MEC documentary filming

Filming…Zimele Stars emerge…

The office of MEC Ina Cronje invited Zimele to be part of a documentary entitled ‘Financial Literacy is everyone’s business’ that would illustrate the changes on the ground for ordinary people over the last 4 years.

Zimele’s role was to identify women, (we chose our leading lady Ma Zuma and her self-help group) who have benefitted from Zimele’s empowerment process in the uMgungundlovu district, helping them to escape the desperate circumstances that South Africans find themselves in today, facing the triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment. In the documentary, we follow Ma Zuma as she explains her circumstances before she became involved with Zimele and the self help group and empowerment activities: those days when she was still dependent on grants. We see how her life changed when she joined the SHG programme, being exposed to ‘financial literacy’ and the emotional support of Zimele and her SHG members. Continue reading

Participatory Market Assessment for Smallholders in Swayimane, KZN

  • UKZN (University of KwaZulu-Natal)
  • Cornell University
  • Zimele

A two day Marketing Training Workshop was held by Zimele and its educational partners, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and New York’s Cornell University, to introduce the theoretical principles of marketing to the group of about 50 participants. Topics covered included an overview of marketing, identifying target markets/ customers, ‘price, product, promotion and place’, a competitor’s analysis, market research, selling skills, an action plan, and ethical principles and practices of selling agriculture. As usual, there was a very mixed group of students ranging from illiterate farmers to educated members of co-ops, so training was a challenge to bring everyone to a common level of understanding. Productive fun at Zimele’s holiday workshops

023The adage ‘teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’ is never truer than with Zimele’s mission to help people help themselves. Julia Buss, co-ordinator of Zimele’s craft programme, recently put together a number of workshops to share craft skills between the Zimele women and their children. These workshops had a multi-faceted aim: to teach children a practical skill that they might not until now have seen as ‘cool’, share a craft skill that might one day help them to earn a living, keep these children entertained during the school holidays (there are few facilities for games or sports in the rural areas), boost children’s self esteem by teaching them a skill and how to create something, and strengthen bonds between children and their mothers or caregivers through the ‘show and tell’ format of the workshops. Financial Education & Market Day in Eshowe

_DSC0534Zimele’s first Women in Business market day took place at the beginning of October, organised in conjunction with the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Financial Literacy Association and the Office of the MEC for Finance, Ina Cronje. The Zimele Enterprise Development department wanted to use this special day to make the Zimele ladies aware of the realities of working and selling products, and helping them with networking and fostering new business relationships to assist them with selling and obtaining future orders.

Our Zimele ladies represented the predominantly farming community of the uThungulu district. Freshly grown agricultural goods were the main products for sale at market day, although craft, poultry, baking and sewing products were also included. Continue reading
