Bake for Profit Course

2013-10-16 16.21.09We had a great time with six Zimele SHG ladies from Wartburg. From day one of the Bake for Profit course they showed considerable interest in learning how to start and run a baking business, even paying for he transport to get to the course out of their own limited funds. Before we started the lessons I gave them a chance to give feedback on their business experiences, good or bad, finding out how they courage each other and getting them to open up about the challenges they experience. This introduction enables me to identify those who need additional support from me and is basically to encourage self confidence in the group as individuals and as entrepreneurs. With this course they learn further confidence through being able t make the high quality products that I train them to produce.

I was overwhelmed by the amount of sales that they managed to generate by selling their baked goods during the course. Their participation in class was excellent and they were able to bring me cash sale receipts as proof of purchases for ingredients in order to keep running the businesses. The best-selling students were Gugu Zondi and Sibongile Mhlongo: although all of them did very well these two ladies were exceptional, reaching sales of a thousand Rand with their baked goods.

In terms of managing their business records I found that they struggled at home or to put them into practice, especially when they had to do without me. The problem might be a low level of literacy for some of them, causing them to avoid business administration records, and the fact that they don’t yet have much practical business experience.
