Thuthukani amaSwazini Traditional Guesthouse

Tucked into the foothills of the Drakensburg Mountains, lies the community of the amaSwazini valley. Here we find possibly one of the strongest SHG groups the Zimele model has seen: the Thuthukani group. These 10 ladies own and run a traditional guesthouse as one of their businesses, with members including a crèche teacher, crafters, farmers, OVC and HBC carers, community tribal court representatives as well as mothers and grandmothers.

Guests are warmly hosted with a variety of community activities to keep them busy during their stay on a traditional homestead:

Gathering firewood is an everyday task for the women, and here guests try it out under the watchful eye of their hosts.

The women are also expert crafters and encourage visitors to try their hand at beading.

Guests hike to a beautiful waterfall, enjoy a picnic with a cup of tea and some homemade treats or help bring the goats home!

Guests feast on traditional dishes, gather water, build mud blocks, walk with the children to school or follow the women as they check on orphans and the elderly….whatever the day brings it will be an authentic, memorable experience.

The capacity of these women in becoming hosts for a unique tourism experience has risen to a whole new level. We invite everyone to experience this hidden treasure!
