Update from the Uthukela District

This month my main focus has been to visit groups to see if they are still functional. I managed to visit Winterton groups and I have established their meeting times and places. There are 8 groups in Winterton that are under Hlanganani cluster. Two of the 8 groups need strengthening as they are not performing well. The groups under Hlanganani cluster mainly focus on craft, however the cluster itself runs an OVC project. The orphan project currently looks after 58 children although the number of identified children needing help is 72, way more than the resources allow the women to work with.

Hlanganani crèche was started by 3 groups under the Hlanganani cluster. The crèche has 21 children currently and 2 teachers who are studying Early Childhood Development. The teachers have done a sterling job in decorating the walls and there are colourful charts pasted up, evidence that the teachers are being trained on their profession. With the cold weather arriving, they give the children oranges to boost their Vitamin C intake instead of just snacks like chips and sweets.

There are some challenges noted in this crèche, like one of the teachers not reporting for duty and not reporting to her colleague. On my arrival Gabisile Mazibuko was alone with the children, the young ones crying for attention and the older ones busy fighting. The problem was that she could not leave the children alone to go and fetch firewood to cook for them. Water is also fetched from far away and she had to do the cooking as well. She ended up cooking porridge for the children as there was not enough firewood to make a proper meal. The three group members that own the crèche refuse to help the two teachers and the total work load is shared between the two teachers. Other than the challenges that can be fixed if the governing body sits together and plans, all is well at this crèche.  The main concern however is them not being registered with the Department, as the crèche has been running since November 2012.

Ubumbano Cluster Children’s Rights Training

I held a Children’s Rights workshop with Ubumbano Cluster on 27 May 2015. The training was successful and the women enjoyed it. The women had a time of reflection on their childhood to think of the times when they had been unfairly treated and when their rights were violated. Most of them shared sad stories and some of them said they did not even realise that their rights were being violated and that they were treating their children in the same manner unknowingly.
